These Pilea peperomioides plants are very close to (if not already) putting out pups! Pilea plants are in 4″ nursery pots which may differ in appearance from the one pictured. They’re all pups from Grant’s personal Pilea peperomioides mother plant. Treat them like succulents – bright light and soil that dries completely between watering – and you’ll have your own mother in no time.
Pilea peperomioides (commonly known as the Chinese Money Plant and colloquially as the “Pay-it-forward” Plant) has a rich history of being commercially non-viable and only obtainable through pups gifted by friends. Once a mother plant is well established, it will begin growing baby plants for you to pass along!
In 1945, Pilea was found by Norwegian missionary Agnar Espegren in Yunnan Province when he was fleeing from China. Espegren took cuttings with him back to Norway and they eventually spread throughout Scandinavia. Pilea peperomioides cuttings were passed from gardener to gardener until it was officially classified in the 80’s. It wasn’t until recently that this unique, minimalist houseplant hit the main horticultural stream!
